Why indoor air is a specific problem here
Most indoor air quality advice is written for humid climates where the enemy is mold and dust mites. Los Angeles and Ventura County have a different set of problems, and they arrive on a predictable schedule.
- Wildfire smoke season. When smoke settles over the basin or pushes down the Santa Clara River valley, fine particulate gets pulled into the house every time the system runs. This is the period when homeowners call us most.
- Santa Ana wind events. Dry offshore winds drive dust and pollen through every gap in the building envelope. The same winds that clog your outdoor coil are loading up everything inside.
- Heat waves that seal the house. During a triple-digit stretch nobody opens a window for days. The same indoor air gets recirculated continuously, and whatever is in it stays in it.
- Coastal versus inland split. Homes in Oxnard, Ventura, Port Hueneme and Camarillo deal with marine-layer moisture and the biological growth that comes with it. Homes in Woodland Hills, Chatsworth, Simi Valley and Moorpark deal with dust and pollen. Those are different problems and they call for different equipment.
The three systems we install
Air Scrubber with ActivePure
An active system. Rather than waiting for air to pass through a filter, it circulates a scrubbing process throughout the conditioned space, which is why it is the option we lean on for odor and surface contamination, not just airborne particles. It runs whenever the system runs and requires no change to how you operate the thermostat.
UV-C germicidal lights
A UV-C lamp mounted where it can hold constant light on the evaporator coil. Its real job is keeping biological growth off the coil itself. In coastal Ventura County homes, where the coil stays damp through the marine-layer months, this is the most useful of the three and often the cheapest to run. It does comparatively little for dust, because dust is not alive.
REME HALO LED
A different technology from the Air Scrubber, made by RGF, using an LED cell rather than a mercury lamp. It distributes an oxidizing plasma into the airstream to address particulates, odors and microbials. The LED generation removed the mercury and extended cell life over the older REME units.

If someone tries to sell you all three at once without asking which of these applies to you, they are selling equipment rather than solving a problem.
Start with the filter, not the add-on
The least exciting recommendation is usually the right first move. A filter upgrade and a realistic replacement schedule will do more for most Los Angeles and Ventura County homes than any powered device, and it costs a fraction as much.
- A higher-MERV filter captures the fine particulate that matters during smoke and dust events, where a cheap fiberglass filter does almost nothing.
- Going too high on MERV without checking your system can choke airflow and strain the blower. The right filter is the highest one your specific system can handle — that is a measurement, not a guess.
- During fire season and Santa Ana months, filters load up far faster than the box says. We check yours at every visit and tell you plainly whether it needs changing.
We handle filter selection and replacement as part of regular service. If you are on a maintenance plan, it is already covered at each visit.
What this equipment will not do
Worth saying plainly, because it is the part most sales pitches leave out.
- None of it works when the system is off. These devices treat air that moves through the system, so a house that never runs heating or cooling gets very little benefit.
- None of it fixes a moisture source. If water is getting in, the repair is the fix; an air purifier just manages the symptom.
- None of it replaces a filter. Filtration and these devices do different jobs, and an add-on is not a reason to neglect the basics.
- None of it is a medical device or a substitute for medical advice.

Typically no for an add-on device on an existing system, though the electrical connection has to be done correctly. Where a permit does apply, we pull it. We will tell you which situation yours is before we start.
UV-C lamps are consumables and lose output well before they stop glowing, which is why an annual replacement is standard. LED cells such as the REME HALO LED last considerably longer. We track replacement dates for customers on a maintenance plan so nobody is running a dead lamp for two years.
It helps, and filtration helps more. The particulate in wildfire smoke is extremely fine, so the filter is what physically captures it. Pair a properly specified filter with an active device and run the system fan during smoke events rather than leaving it on auto.
