Before you replace a system, make sure the problem is the system. A thermostat fault looks exactly like a dead furnace or a dead AC, and it is one of the least expensive things that can go wrong.

When the thermostat is the actual problem

We get called for no heat and no cooling constantly, and a meaningful share of those calls end at the thermostat rather than the equipment. Typical signs:

• Blank or dead display, or a screen that resets itself
• The set temperature and the room temperature never agree, and one room is always wrong
• The system short-cycles — turning on and off every few minutes
• Heating runs when you call for cooling, or the fan runs continuously
• The system will not turn on at all, but the breaker is fine and the unit has power
• A smart thermostat that keeps dropping off Wi-Fi or losing its schedule

A failed thermostat and a failed control board present identically to a homeowner, and they are nowhere near the same repair. Telling them apart is a diagnostic, not a guess, and it is why we do not quote a system replacement over the phone.

The C-wire problem in older homes

This is the single most common obstacle to a smart thermostat in this area, and it catches people out after they have already bought the device.

Most smart thermostats need a common wire — a C-wire — to stay continuously powered. A great deal of the San Fernando Valley and older Ventura County housing was wired long before anyone anticipated that, so the thermostat cable at the wall has four conductors and no C.

There are several ways through it: running a new cable, using an adapter that the thermostat manufacturer supports, or choosing a thermostat that does not require a C-wire. Which one is right depends on how your system is wired and how accessible the run is. What does not work is ignoring it — a smart thermostat scavenging power without a C-wire is a well-known cause of intermittent faults that get misdiagnosed as equipment failure.

Heat pumps need the right thermostat

If you have a heat pump, or you are considering one, the thermostat is not interchangeable with a furnace thermostat. A heat pump needs a control that understands reversing-valve operation and auxiliary heat staging. Pairing a heat pump with the wrong thermostat is a reliable way to run expensive backup heat when you did not need it and to wonder why the electric bill jumped.

Smart thermostats in a Southern California climate

A scheduling thermostat saves the most money in climates with long, severe heating seasons. Ours is not that. The savings here come from a narrower set of behaviours, and it is worth being realistic about which ones:

• Pre-cooling before a heat wave peak. Genuinely useful in inland Los Angeles and Ventura County, where the afternoon load is the whole problem.
• Not cooling an empty house. The most reliable saving, and it does not require anything clever.
• Utility demand-response programs. Both LADWP and Southern California Edison territories have programs that some connected thermostats can participate in.
• Runtime visibility. Seeing that your system ran eleven hours yesterday is often the first sign of a problem that has been developing quietly.

What a smart thermostat will not do is fix an undersized system, a low charge, or a house that leaks air. If someone sells you one as the answer to a comfort problem, be skeptical.
